Vintage Lange Bassoon (c. early 1900s) This is a fascinating older bassoon, likely around 100 years old (give or take a couple of decades). It features several unique characteristics, including a low G key and a boot-joint mechanism that links to the wing to open the C♯ key. It does not have a high E or E♭ key, and the instrument predates tone-hole tubes. The wood is beautifully figured with attractive curly grain. It will be sold in a professional Fox bassoon case and includes a Leitzinger bocal.
This bassoon is a project instrument. It has recently received significant work—repadding, mechanical adjustments, and some crack repairs. While it is currently playing, it still needs further sealing and should be considered an antique rather than a modern performance instrument. For that reason, it is not recommended for a young or advancing student seeking a stable, reliable instrument. Instead, this bassoon is ideal for a mechanically inclined enthusiast, collector, or someone interested in historical instruments who wants to continue improving it or preserve it as part of a collection.
Lange was a bassoon maker who previously worked for Heckel as a tuner. After his death in 1905, another former Heckel employee continued producing bassoons under the Lange name until around 1945. Because of this overlap, the exact manufacturing date of this instrument is difficult to determine.
